First Scarless Thyroid Surgery in Children
Ege University (EU) Faculty of Medicine, Department of Pediatric Surgery performed the "Scarless Thyroid" surgery for children for the first time in Turkey. Performing the operation, Ege University Medical Faculty Hospital Pediatric Surgery Department Lecturer Assoc. Dr. Emre Divarcı gave information about the "Scarless Thyroidectomy" surgery, which was performed for the first time in children in Turkey. Assoc. Dr. Divarcı said, “In this surgery, thyroid surgery can be performed by making small incisions from the inner part of the lower lip without any incisions or scars on the neck. Our patient, 17 years old, presented with the development of a nodule in his thyroid. The dimensions of the nodule and the patient's characteristics were suitable for this surgery. For this reason, we decided to do the surgery without a trace.”
Assoc. Dr. Emre Divarcı said, “In thyroid surgeries, the thyroid region can be reached by making an incision in the neck. This causes a prominent scar on the neck that is aesthetically uncomfortable. In scarless thyroidectomy surgery, we can perform thyroid surgery by making 5-10 millimeter incisions from the inner part of the lower lip. This method provides the opportunity to reach the neck by advancing with endoscopic instruments and perform thyroid surgery in a way that is not visible from the outside. In this way, no traces are seen when viewed from the outside and the worries about the trace are eliminated. This surgery is a method that can be performed in suitable patients. It has started to be practiced in adults around the world and is becoming more common. For the first time in our country, EÜ General Surgery Department Faculty Member Prof. Dr. It was applied by Özer Makay and his team in adults and still continues to be applied. We have performed this surgery for children for the first time in our country as EU Pediatric Surgery Department. This surgery was also the first scarless thyroid surgery performed in pediatric surgery centers in the world. Scarless thyroidectomy will also be an important surgical option for children and adolescents who need thyroid surgery. As Ege University Department of Pediatric Surgery, we will try to be the pioneer of this business in our country.”
